How Changing Seasons Impact Your Roof's Lifespan
By Kresta Roofing
In the San Antonio and Boerne areas, our roofs endure some of the most extreme weather fluctuations that Texas has to offer. From blistering summers to unpredictable hailstorms and sudden temperature drops in winter, it’s no surprise that the changing seasons can take a toll on your roof. Understanding how these seasonal changes impact your roof’s lifespan is critical to keeping it in peak condition and avoiding costly repairs down the road.
Summer Heat and UV Exposure
Summers in Texas, particularly in the Hill Country, are notoriously hot. Temperatures often reach 100°F or higher, and the sun’s UV rays can do a number on your roof. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can cause asphalt shingles to crack, curl, and fade. As a GAF Certified roofing contractor, I’ve seen firsthand how this kind of damage can significantly reduce the lifespan of your roof. GAF shingles, which we often use for their durability, are designed to resist UV damage better than many other materials, but even the best products will wear out over time under the relentless Texas sun.
Another aspect of summer is thermal expansion and contraction. The extreme heat causes roofing materials to expand during the day and then contract at night as temperatures drop. This constant movement can lead to warping, cracked shingles, and even leaks if not addressed.
Sudden Storms and Hail Damage
The spring and fall seasons in San Antonio and Boerne are famous for sudden thunderstorms, and with them, the risk of roof hail damage. According to the National Weather Service, Texas sees more hail events than any other state, with over 800 hailstorms annually. Hailstones, depending on their size, can damage shingles by bruising, cracking, or even puncturing them. Once the protective granules on your shingles are compromised, your roof becomes vulnerable to water damage, which accelerates the aging process.
As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, I always recommend products like Owens Corning’s TruDefinition Duration shingles, which offer greater impact resistance to help mitigate damage from these types of events. However, even the toughest shingles can’t always withstand large or repeated hailstorms, so regular inspections are a must, especially after storms.
Winter Cold and Frost
While we don’t get much snow in our region, winter does bring its own set of challenges. Sudden cold fronts can cause temperatures to plummet overnight. Just like the heat of summer causes expansion, the cold causes contraction, which can create small fissures or cracks in shingles and roofing materials over time. These cracks can allow water to seep in, leading to leaks and water damage inside your home.
Another risk during the winter months is ice dam formation. In San Antonio and Boerne, it’s not common, but it can still happen when water from melting frost refreezes at the edge of the roof, causing a blockage. This trapped water can seep under shingles and compromise your roof’s structural integrity.
Wind and Debris Year-Round
Regardless of the season, wind is a constant concern for roofs in the Hill Country. Strong winds can lift shingles, allowing water to penetrate the underlayment. It’s especially prevalent during storms, but even high winds on a clear day can cause problems over time. This is why regular inspections and prompt repairs are crucial, especially after windstorms.
Fallen branches or wind-blown debris also pose a threat, as they can puncture or scrape against roofing materials. Keeping your trees trimmed and removing any debris from your roof will help extend its lifespan.
How to Protect Your Roof
To protect your roof from the impact of seasonal changes, regular maintenance is essential. I always recommend scheduling a roof inspection twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall, to catch any potential issues early. We offer free roof inspections to assess for damage from heat, hail, wind, or cold. Additionally, proper ventilation and insulation in your attic will help regulate temperatures and reduce the thermal stress on your roof.
If you’re in San Antonio or Boerne, you know that Texas weather can change in an instant. But with the right roofing materials, proper maintenance, and an experienced roofing company to back you up, you can ensure your roof lasts as long as possible. Whether it’s extreme heat or unexpected hailstorms, your roof is your home’s first line of defense, and we’re here to help you protect it.
